Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) focuses on the development of higher education in the country through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode.

Eligibility: The qualifying mark is 55% in Post Graduation for general category and 50% for reserved category. It may also be noted that specific discipline-wise eligibility criteria may also be applied.

Selection process: Entrance Test is compulsory for all candidates applying in Stream B (Category B). However, if the Discipline so desires, candidates applying in Stream A (Category A), may also be asked to appear in the Entrance Test.

Stream A (Category A): Candidates having M.Phil or 5 years relevant teaching/ professional experience after Post Graduation, who can directly undertake thesis work for Ph.D. course work in such cases may be assigned as decided by the Discipline.

Stream B (Category B): Candidates having Post Graduate degree, who will have to undergo basic course work before or along with undertaking thesis work.

How to apply: Candidates fulfilling eligibility criteria in the respective disciplines may download the soft copy of the application form from the IGNOU website and submit the filled in form along with the following:
  • DD for Rs.750/- drawn in favour of IGNOU payable at New Delhi;
  • Attested copies of certificates in support of educational and experience qualifications (wherever applicable);
  • Attested copy of certificate in support of reserved category
  • Synopsis of the research to be undertaken for candidates applying under Stream A.
